AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV and causes a total collapse of the immune system and resistance against diseases over time. The incidences of HIV in Mumbai has grown rapidly since the first surveys were performed in 1989. Random testing of different segments of the population show different levels of incidence. India had 2.5 million confirmed HIV positive cases in 2008. Maharashtra had 14,325 cases in 2006. Alarmingly large incidence rates of 51% have been found among sex-workers in Mumbai. among blood donors in various government run hospitals.
